NC State Leads Effort to Create ‘Next Generation’ of Experts on Hazards and Natural Disasters

Highlighting North Carolina State University’s leadership in hazard and disaster studies, NC State’s Dr. Thomas Birkland was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to lead a nationwide effort to recruit and mentor young researchers to study disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The effort will focus on pairing newly minted Ph.D.s in the social sciences and engineering with a team of experienced mentors from eight universities to work on disaster- and hazard-related studies. Mentors will come from political science, planning, geography, sociology, and other disciplines that contribute to understanding how disasters affect communities. Continue Reading »

Gilligan Returning to College of Engineering After Six Years as Research Vice Chancellor

North Carolina State University Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies John Gilligan has announced his intention to leave the vice chancellor position to return to the College of Engineering as a faculty member and special advisor to the dean on June 1. Chancellor James Oblinger made the announcement today.

The vice chancellor for research and graduate studies is responsible for state, federal, industry, and foundation-sponsored programs; university regulatory compliance, sponsored program support, university project development, technology transfer and commercialization, Centennial Campus and NC State’s graduate school. Protein Sequences from T. rex Collagen Show Evolutionary Relationships of Dinosaurs

Which came first, the chicken or the alligator? When it comes to the Tyrannosaurus rex family tree, it turns out that both modern-day chickens and alligators can call the T. rex “cousin.”

A group of researchers, including North Carolina State University paleontologist Dr. Mary Schweitzer, have used protein sequences from 68 million-year-old bone-derived collagen to determine the evolutionary relationships of T. rex. North Carolina State University will be the host for a summit on U.S./China education partnerships on Thursday, May 1, at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation on Centennial Campus. The summit will feature the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the State Board of Education and China’s Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education.

Nurture Over Nature

Score one for the nurture side of the nature vs. nurture debate, as North Carolina State University geneticists have shown that environmental factors such as lifestyle and geography play a large role in whether certain genes are turned on or off.

By studying gene expression of white blood cells in 46 Moroccan Amazighs, or Berbers – including desert nomads, mountain agrarians and coastal urban dwellers – the NC State researchers and collaborators in Morocco and the United States showed that up to one-third of genes are differentially expressed due to where and how the Moroccan Amazighs live.
