NC State Makes Best Workplace List

NC State fared well in a new set of ratings based on reviews from people who know the university best: employees.

NC State is 10th on a list of best universities to work for compiled by Glassdoor, a jobs website. Scores are based on employee reviews for more than 100 universities, from Arizona State to Yale.

To be included, universities had to have at least 20 reviews submitted within a specified time frame. Employees assigned ratings on a five-point scale, with 1 being very dissatisfied and 5 very satisfied.

The top score of 4.2 went to the University of Kansas. NC State earned a 3.9.

Here’s the top 10 list from Glassdoor:

  1. Kansas
  2. Iowa State
  3. Brigham Young
  4. Georgia
  5. Brown
  6. Michigan State
  7. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  8. Cornell
  9. Pennsylvania
  10. NC State

Data analysts for Glassdoor found that employee satisfaction was related to benefits, research opportunities and work/life balance. NC State employees praised a variety of facets of university life in their comments, from positive working relationships to campus scenery. Their most common criticism was a lack of employee raises during the economic downturn.

More of the highly rated universities were in the eastern half of the country. Harvard, Yale and Princeton, familiar Ivy league names on traditional best college lists, were absent from the top 10 employee ratings, although Brown, Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania were included.

The biggest universities weren’t necessarily the best places to work. The top three universities in student enrollment—Arizona State, Central Florida and Ohio State— finished out of the top 10.
