The Inventors

NC State is North Carolina’s laboratory.

For nearly 125 years, that laboratory has turned out innovative ideas and products that have improved lives across the state, the nation and the world.

The university has been a leader in encouraging new ideas and helping students, faculty and the state shepherd them to fruition. From agriculture to textiles to computer science to nanotechnology, NC State has driven technological innovation in North Carolina.

NC State invests in innovation. Among public universities without a medical school, the university rated seventh nationally in research investment in 2009. And that investment pays off: NC State research has spun off more than 80 startup companies and drawn $750 million in venture capital.

A key to that innovation is an engaged, entrepreneurial faculty committed to research that promises real results.

“Just as a great institution of higher education is a potent engine for personal and societal transformation; innovative, creative and committed faculty are the engine of a great university,” Chancellor Randy Woodson said at his installation in October 2010.

Meet some of the university’s most innovative, creative and committed faculty members: The Inventors.
