Readers Gather for Read Smart Program

Love discussing books with bright and gifted scholars? The Read Smart series offers the perfect venue and gathers this Thursday, Aug. 23. at 7 p.m. at the Cameron Village Regional Library. Both works of fiction and nonfiction will be highlighted and this month’s session focuses on Toni Morrison’s beautiful new novel Home.

Sheila Smith McKoy directs the university’s African American Cultural Center and leads this month’s event. The series invites NC State scholars whose research and professional interest match the book’s themes. For instance, Sarah Ash, professor of nutrition discussed with the audience the autobiography by Gabrielle Hamilton; Blood, Bones and Butter.

Shevaun Neupert, associate professor of lifespan developmental psychology, directed a talk about Turn of Mind, a novel by Alice LaPlante that deals with aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Professors say they love integrating their research with popular novels.

“The participants always ask great questions and it is wonderful interacting with members of the community,” Neupert says.

Read Smart is supported by the Friends of the Library of NCSU Libraries and continues through the fall. Here’s the complete schedule.
