Charity Bike Ride

Paul Rudershausen, research technician in the Department of Biology, will be no couch potato this winter break. Instead he is embarking on a self-funded charity bike ride across the country with a planned route through California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, and finally North Carolina. What’s his goal? Raising $10,000 to expand and remodel the pelican pool at the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter (OWLS), a non-profit dedicated to treating and rehabilitating wildlife injured in coastal North Carolina.

“The shelter must accommodate growing numbers of pelican patients and this money will help fund that remodeling project,” says Rudershausen, who volunteers at the shelter.

In 2009 Rudershausen embarked on a similar ride and mission starting at Newport, Ore., and concluding at Atlantic Beach, N.C., successfully raising enough money to build the shelter a mammal cage.
