Work on Poultry Virus Honored
An NC State researcher who discovered an infectious disease common in broiler chickens and is now working to find a cure has been honored for his positive contributions to the poultry industry. James Guy, professor of poultry health management, is the first recipient of the Dr. Charles Beard Research Excellence Award from USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation.
Beard, formerly vice president of research at USPOULTRY, presented the award to Guy at the International Poultry Scientific Forum last month.
“It is a distinct honor to receive this award,” Guy said. “Dr. Beard has had a distinguished career of service to the U.S. and world poultry industries, and he is an exceptionally nice person. I am thrilled to have my name associated with his.”
Guy discovered the virus that causes infectious proventriculitis, a disease that causes inflammation and swelling of the stomach, resulting in poor growth and difficulties in processing broilers. His research on the adenovirus-like virus is now focused on development of a vaccine.
John Glisson, director of research for USPOULTRY, said Guy’s work shows the benefits of industry-supported research.
Guy joined the faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984. He is a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists and the American College of Poultry Veterinarians.
USPOULTRY, also known as the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association, is a membership organization that supports the industry through research, education, communication and technical assistance.
