Talley Phase I to Open

The new Talley Student Union is preparing for a student opening in the coming days. Just don’t ask precisely when.

That’s because the first people to see the first phase of the three-part, $120 million renovation and addition will be the students who follow along on the Talley Student Union homepage.

“We want the opening to be student-centric and geared toward the students the union will serve,” said student centers director Tim Hogan. “The word will be spread by the Students Center Board of Directors and key leaders on campus.”

So sometime in the next week or so – students will be alerted in advance – the final pieces of furniture will be installed and the doors will open at the newly appointed union and students will have access to a wide array of dining options, including four new restaurants and a convenience store called Talley Market, which will offer Howling Cow ice cream and Yates Mill Bakery products.

Later this fall, lounges and gaming centers will be open for students studying or looking to relax between classes.

While this opening will have the feel of a big roll-out, it’s just the first of three phases that will be completed over the next 15 months, with a grand reopening celebration planned for the spring of 2015.

The second phase will open in January with a new ballroom, meeting rooms, a student senate chamber and administrative offices.

The final phase is the south addition that will house the main location of the NC State Bookstores and all remaining student-focused organizations.
