NC State has received the 2014 APPA Sustainability Award in recognition of sustainability excellence in campus educational facilities.

APPA, a professional association of more than 10,000 education facilities professionals at 1,300 educational institutions, selected NC State for its sustainable practices, processes and leadership in facilities management, including maintenance and operations, energy and utility use, and planning and construction.

“The Sustainability Award criteria measure the current level and effort of a facilities management department to integrate sustainable policies and green practices throughout all facets of the organization, ultimately embedding them within the educational institution,” said David Cain, chair of APPA’s Awards and Recognition Committee.

NC State is the first public university in North Carolina to receive the award, which APPA launched in 2012.

Jack Colby, assistant vice chancellor for facilities operations, and David Hatch, director of repair and renovation, accepted the award at APPA’s annual conference last month.

“Many NC State staff, faculty and students have helped make NC State a leaner, smarter, stronger and more sustainable university. It is a great honor for NC State to be recognized nationally for its sustainability progress,” Colby said.

NC State was among six educational institutions honored this year in categories based on size and type of school.
