Glossary of Fireworks Terms
Don’t know the difference between a snapper and a glow worm? Or, even a firework and firecracker? This glossary of common terms related to fireworks might help.
- Bottle rocket – a small rocket attached to a long, thin stick
- Consumer fireworks – fireworks designed for public use and tested and approved by the U.S. Consumer Protection Agency
- Display fireworks – fireworks designed for professional use
- Dud – firework that does not properly ignite.
- Explosive Cap – designed to be fired in toy pistols
- Firecracker – a small rolled-paper tube containing gunpowder designed to produce a large noise
- Firework – a device that functions by combustion of explosives to create visual and sound effects
- Fountain – firework that produce showers of sparks.
- Pyrotechnics – “the science of fire,” or the chemical materials that create fire, light, heat, noise, or gas
- Roman candle – a type of firework with a long, thick paper tube that contains layers of “stars”
- Smoke device – consists of a tube or sphere containing a pyrotechnic mixture that produces white or colored smoke
- Snake and glow worm – composed of pressed pellets of pyrotechnic mixture that produces a large, snake-like ash when burning
- Snapper – a small paper designed to produce a noise and spark when dropped
- Sparkler – a handheld wire or stick designed to burn slowly while emitting sparks
- Trick noisemaker – small plastic or paper item that produces a small noise designed to surprise users
