Search Begins for Vice Chancellor for Information Technology

The search for a vice chancellor for information technology (VCIT) is set to begin after Chancellor James Oblinger accepted the recommendation of the Information Technology Scoping Team. The VCIT is a new position and will be chief information officer for the university.

"Information technology plays an increasingly central role in the institutional effectiveness of NC State," Oblinger said. "The vice chancellor for information technology will ensure that the continued growth of IT infrastructure is strategically managed with vision and innovation."

An interim consolidated structure of IT function on campus will be implemented as part of the transition plan.

The chancellor will recommend the creation of this position to the Board of Governors (BOG).  In anticipation of BOG approval, a nominating committee has been appointed to begin a national search. The search firm of Russell Reynolds Associates has been selected to assist in the recruitment process.

The nominating committee includes: Larry Nielsen, provost and co-chair; Charlie Leffler, vice chancellor for finance and business and co-chair; John Blondin, professor, physics; Keith Boswell, director of technology, College of Engineering; Lisa Clough, university budget officer; Robert Evans, head, biological and agricultural engineering; Gwen Hazlehurst, director, Enterprise Application & Database Services; Dennis Kekas, executive director, Networking Technology Institute; Susan Klein, director, technology support services; Gayle Lanier, board of trustees and vice president, Nortel Networks; Matt Muñoz, graduate Student, College of Design; Alice Scales, assistant professor, College of Education; Greg Sparks, director, communication technologies; Ira Weiss, dean, College of Management.

Reorganization of information technology is the first priority among NC State's 21 PACE initiatives. PACE, the President's Advisory Committee on Efficiency and Effectiveness, is UNC System President Erskine Bowles' effort to cut costs through greater efficiencies.

The scoping team began its work in the spring, reviewing the range of current IT functions and organizations at NC State and at peer universities.
