FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Acclaimed broadcast journalist Charlie Rose will moderate a panel discussion of experts in sustainable design at North Carolina State University's Millennium Seminar Series at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Stewart Theater on campus. The panel will include public health expert Dick Jackson, NC State College of Design Dean Marvin Malecha, president-elect of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and noted architect Thom Mayne.

Rose is the host of "Charlie Rose," the nightly PBS program that engages America's newsmakers. A recipient of the George Peabody Broadcasting Award, the Emmy Award and the CableACE Award, Rose earned bachelor's and law degrees from Duke University.

Jackson is the former director of the Center for Environmental Health at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga., and is currently a professor of environmental health at the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2005, he received the Presidential Distinguished Executive Award from President Bush for his outstanding leadership and extraordinary achievement in service to the nation, and in particular to improving environmental public health. He also serves on the board of directors of the AIA.

Malecha maintains an active involvement with architectural practice in roles ranging from peer reviewer to project architect and designer. His work has been recognized with a number of awards, including the prestigious 2003 Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education from the AIA and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

Mayne is founder and design principal of Morphosis, a Santa Monica-based architectural office, and a co-founder of the Southern California Institute of Architecture. He is also a tenured professor at UCLA and a visiting professor and lecturer at institutions and universities around the world. While at Morphosis, Mayne has received 25 Progressive Architecture Awards, 69 AIA Awards and numerous other design recognitions.

Mary P. Easley, first lady of North Carolina and a senior lecturer at NC State, coordinates the Millennium Seminars series. The series provides opportunities for students to interact with world leaders from diverse backgrounds. Presentations address world issues from the speaker's perspective, placing local and national events in a global context. The seminars are designed to engage, encourage and inspire students to reach beyond borders and think more globally about what they have learned, and what their role will be as they move into the workforce.
