FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

North Carolina State University has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund 32 Robert Noyce Scholarships from 2008-2011 for students preparing to become high school mathematics teachers. NC State was one of 16 institutions nationwide to receive this award.

The Noyce Mathematics Education Teaching Scholars (Noyce METS) program is available to NC State undergraduate students completing a double major in mathematics education and either math or statistics, or to students with an undergraduate degree in math or statistics who are pursuing teaching licensure or a graduate degree in mathematics education at NC State.

The scholarships are valued at $20,000 each; undergraduate student recipients will be awarded $10,000 per year for two years, and graduate students will receive $20,000 for one year. Each Noyce Scholar will commit to teaching in a high-need school district for two years for every one year of funding received. During their participation in the Noyce METS program, the students will engage in special seminars focused on uses of technology for teaching mathematics; culture and diversity in the classroom; and issues of teaching in high-need schools in both rural and urban settings.

NC State will begin awarding Noyce METS scholarships in fall 2008.
