Patrick Rand, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Architecture in North Carolina State University’s College of Design, has been elected to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows. Rand is one of 76 architects elevated to fellow in 2007 at the AIA National Convention held May 4 in San Antonio, Texas. Out of a membership of more than 80,000, fewer than 2,500 AIA members are given the honor of fellowship. It is conferred upon architects with 10 years of membership in the AIA who have made significant contributions to the field of architecture and to society. Rand joined NC State as an assistant professor of architecture in 1977 and was promoted to full professor in 1998. During his tenure at NC State he has served as assistant dean and associate dean of research for the College of Design, and assistant director and director of graduate programs for the college’s School of Architecture. He has received numerous teaching awards, including a national AIA award and a National Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Education Commendation. Rand has also advised more than 100 graduate students. Rand is a fellow of the Masonry Society, and has the distinction of being the only architect invited to lead the society and receive its President’s Medal. His tenure as president included the creation of the society’s first sustainability committee, which he continues to chair. Rand received his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and his master’s from the University of Oregon. - 30 -
