Provost Responds to Anti-GLBT Graffiti

Provost Warwick Arden issued the following statement Wednesday:

Diversity and inclusion are core values of NC State, helping to weave the fabric of a campus community that includes more than 40,000 students, faculty and staff who come to NC State from all over North Carolina, the nation and the world.

A diverse population enriches and enlivens the educational experience for students in pursuit of a college education and for whom NC State is the gateway to opportunity. Everyone should be free to pursue their education, attain their personal goals and do their jobs in a safe and welcoming environment.

It is in that spirit that we strongly condemn the thoughtless and shameful act of vandalism and harassment taken against our GLBT Center and against our campus on Monday night.

Not only are we a diverse campus community, we encourage open and civil discussion on difficult issues–the kind of discussion that allows us to gain greater respect and a better understanding of each other. I am encouraged and proud to hear that once again students, staff, faculty and administrators are taking a stand in the face of a hateful act. Our unity is a reflection of our shared values and a dynamic statement on the importance of open, constructive and respectful dialogue.
