NC State Moves Into Top 100

Belltower at night.

NC State advanced to No. 95 on one of the most closely watched rankings of the nation’s colleges and universities, moving into the top 100 for the first time since 2009. The university tied with Florida State to place 43rd among public institutions, up four spots from last year.

The 2015 “Best Colleges” list, published by U.S. News & World Report, ranks 1,800 public and private institutions using a formula that measures selectivity, graduation rate, class size, student/faculty ratio, reputation, economic resources and alumni giving. The formula does not, strictly speaking, measure academic quality.

The company also released rankings for national liberal arts institutions, regional schools, business schools, engineering schools and historically black colleges, as well as several specialized lists.

NC State is again a “best value” on the U.S. News list, ranking eighth among public institutions for providing a high-quality education at an affordable price.

The university ranked 18th on the list of “Best Colleges for Veterans” and made an unranked list of 91 “A-Plus Schools for B Students.” Schools on the veterans list “participate in federal initiatives helping veterans and active service members apply, pay for and complete their degrees,” U.S. News said on its website. Schools on the A-plus list are “those where nonsuperstars have a decent shot at being accepted and thriving  where spirit and hard work could make all the difference to admissions,” the website said.

The undergraduate program in the Poole College of Management ranked 93rd on the U.S. News list, and the College of Engineering moved up one spot to 31st nationally. Both of these rankings are based solely on peer assessments.
