Dean Solomon Honored at May 4 Event

The College of Sciences is hosting a university-wide celebration of Dan Solomon’s 34-year career at NC State on May 4. All faculty and staff are invited to attend the event at 5 p.m. in the State Ballroom of the Talley Student Union.

Solomon announced in September that he would step down as the inaugural dean of the College, effective July 1.Solomon came to NC State in 1981 as head of the Department of Statistics. He has been a dean at the university since 2000, serving in that capacity for 13 years in the former College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. In 2013, he became the inaugural dean of the College of Sciences.

During his 34 years as an administrator at NC State, Solomon has been a driving force in developing and promoting effective teaching methods, expanding research and graduate programs, and propelling the university-wide emphasis on convergence science that solves great societal problems.

He has also stressed the importance of diversifying science fields by promoting, developing or leading a wide array of activities designed to diversify the sciences workforce pipeline, student body and faculty. His efforts have created a more inclusive and welcoming community and enhanced campus-wide work-life balance.

Faculty and staff who are interested in honoring Solomon’s accomplishments with a gift can contribute to the Solomon Scholars Fund, which supports the College’s Daniel L. Solomon Scholars Program. The College is also collecting photos and memories of Solomon that can be sent to Marla Gregg at marla_gregg@ncsu.edu.
