Gregg Museum Breaks Ground Tuesday

In 2010, the NC State Board of Trustees approved an ambitious plan to move the Gregg Museum of Art and Design from the Talley Student Center to the historic chancellor’s residence on Hillsborough Street. The plan also called for the residence and grounds to undergo an extensive renovation and for the existing building to be augmented by a 15,000-square-foot contemporary addition.

In approving the plan, the trustees required a museum campaign committee to raise $3.9 million of the project’s total projected cost (currently pegged at $9.6 million) from private donations before the first spadeful of earth could be moved.

On Tuesday, at 3 p.m., the dirt will start to fly as Chancellor Woodson and other university leaders don hard hats, grab shovels and start digging at the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Gregg Museum. The event will celebrate the public-private collaboration—with partners including NC State students and alumni, Wake County and the city of Raleigh—that makes the project possible.

The public is invited to the groundbreaking ceremony at the chancellor’s former residence at 1903 Hillsborough St. at 3 p.m. After the ceremony ends, light refreshments will be offered inside the residence.
