Emergency Drill at Carmichael March 26

The parking lot near the Carmichael Gym will be closed for an emergency management exercise on March 26.

NC State Emergency Management and Mission Continuity will facilitate a full-scale emergency preparedness exercise 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, March 26, in and around Carmichael Gym and Casey Aquatic Center. The simulation will help NC State and local responders as well as university leadership prepare for a potential emergency.

Parking lots between Carmichael Recreation Center and Miller Fields will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. while emergency responders conduct the exercise.

No evacuations, WolfAlerts, road closures, disruptions to scheduled campus events or impacts to normal operations will occur. More information on the exercise is available online.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an actual emergency, campuswide evacuations are communicated by the WolfAlert Emergency Notification System.

Evacuation procedures for specific buildings are maintained by the Fire Marshal’s Office and disseminated by building liaisons to building occupants. Evacuation diagrams are posted near all elevators and in common areas. Contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 515-2568 for more information.

General evacuation procedures are available at wolfalert.ncsu.edu and, regardless of the location, the following should be considered when preparing for and responding to an evacuation alert:

Planning for an Evacuation

The time to plan for an emergency is before the emergency occurs. Think about what you would do in the event of an emergency and develop a plan. Familiarize yourself with multiple exit points and evacuation routes or safe areas within the building. Know what the fire alarm and other notification sources sound like. Discuss emergency plans with building liaisons.

Response During an Evacuation

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Call 911 (or 515-3000) to report additional information relevant to the event: status and location of injured persons, specific location of a fire or active shooter, etc.
  3. If time permits, stabilize all lab procedures, turn off stoves/ovens and unplug or disable any device which would escalate an emergency situation if unattended.
  4. Gather only essential belongings (cell phone, ID, keys, medications, wallet/purse).
  5. Leave immediately. DO NOT use elevators.
  6. Assist any person in immediate danger.
  7. If requested, check nearby restrooms, copier rooms, bathrooms, storage rooms or other common areas where someone may not have heard the evacuation signal/notice. Check on anyone with a disability who may need assistance.
  8. Move quickly. Walk with a purpose. Do not push or shove others.
  9. Once outside the building, do not reenter the building until directed by emergency responders. Remain at least 300 feet away from the building and await further instructions.
