The folks that introduced me into the Higher Ed sphere saw something in me as a first-year student. I was an orientation counselor when I came to NC State after my first semester here. I met the director of orientation because he had to drive me around because I had broken my leg when I came in for orientation. So he was my orientation counselor, and my fall semester we randomly ran into each other and he said, “You should be an orientation counselor! Why don't you come interview to be an orientation counselor?” I guess that is a favorite memory, but, you know, it was those interactions with people like Roger Callanan, like Roxanna McGraw who worked in orientation, like Dr. Monica Leach in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences — who saw something in me and in a lot of my peers — who truly made the experience worthwhile.
