Monteiro-Riviere Wins Women Scholars Award

Dr. Nancy Monteiro-Riviere, professor of investigative dermatology and toxicology, will accept the inaugural Purdue University Distinguished Women Scholars Award this week.

The award, which includes a $2,000 honorarium, honors doctoral graduates of Purdue who have made significant scholarly contributions to their academic communities. As part of Thursday’s award ceremony, held during campus Women’s History Month events, Monteiro-Riviere will discuss her career, describe her experience at Purdue and offer advice to young scholars.

Monteiro-Riviere is a member of the Department of Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as a professor in the joint NC State/University of North Carolina Department of Biomedical Engineering and a research adjunct professor of dermatology at UNC School of Medicine. She is a fellow in the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and the American College of Toxicology.

Monteiro-Riviere, the associate editor for Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews in Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology, serves on six toxicology editorial boards. She also serves on several national panels, including a National Research Council committee to review the federal strategy to address environmental, health and safety research needs for engineered nanoscale materials. She has published more than 245 manuscripts in the field of skin toxicology and is editor of the book Nanotoxicology: Characterization and Dosing and Health Effects.

In addition to a master’s and doctorate in veterinary anatomy from Purdue, Monteiro-Riviere completed a postdoctoral fellowship in toxicology at the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology (now Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences) in Research Triangle Park.
