No Bike? No Problem: Campus Bike Share Is Here
It’s 10 a.m. on a weekday. You’re running late and need to get across campus quickly.
You just missed the Wolfline bus. You don’t have time to walk. You can’t drive because parking isn’t available. But don’t panic just yet.
In mid-August NC State Transportation begins a pilot program with LimeBike, a bike share service that will provide campus with 300 public bikes available for short-term rental.
To rent a LimeBike for 30 minutes, NC State students, faculty and staff pay just 50 cents ‒ half the rate charged to the general public.
“There is no kiosk docking station so bikes can be ridden anywhere and parked at any bike rack or designated bike parking area throughout campus,” said Mike Kennon, NC State’s assistant transportation director for planning and operations.
Use the LimeBike app to locate the nearest bike, unlock the bike from the rack and relock the bike when you’ve finished your ride. To get started, download and sign into the app using your university email address. Your initial $5 deposit is refundable if you decide not to use the service.
According to Kennon, bikes will be centered initially around residence halls and large activity areas on campus. A LimeBike operations team will maintain the bikes, support users and balance the fleet so that bikes do not accumulate in just one area of campus.
Bike share has become increasingly popular in urban areas due to wellness and sustainability benefits. Traveling by bike can result in cleaner air, less traffic congestion and improved health. LimeBike has already launched in select cities nationwide, as well as university campuses including UNC Greensboro.
