John William Wilcut, professor of crop science, died Friday, Aug. 24. He was 52. While at NC State Wilcut received numerous awards, including Outstanding Educator from the Southern Weed Science Society and the Outstanding Faculty Member Award by Agronomy Club in the Department of Crop Science at NC State.
He is survived by his mother, Irene Wilcut; wife, Cathy; two children, Jared and Caitlyn; two brothers, Kerry Wilcut and James Wilcut; sister, Kim Amodio; and several nieces and nephews. Bob Stipe, a former professor of landscape architecture, died Sunday, Sept. 23. He was 79. A native of Easton, Penn., Stipe graduated from Duke University where he earned degrees in economics and law. Stipe also studied urban and regional planning at UNC-Chapel Hill. Stipe served on the boards of numerous national preservation groups including Old Salem and the Conservation Trust for North Carolina. He was also the recipient of the Louise DuPont Crowninshield Award for Superlative Lifetime Achievement in Historic Preservation, the highest award given by the National Trust.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine; and two sons, Daniel and Frederick. Memorial donations may be made to Preservation North Carolina, Box 27644, Raleigh, NC 27611-7644.
Earl Richardson Shannon, Jr., a former systems programmer, died Sunday, Oct. 28. He was 51. Shannon was a U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of NC State. He is survived by his parents, Martha Frances Miskelly Shannon and Earl Richardson Shannon, Sr.; and brothers David Jordan Shannon and Edward Bruce Shannon.
