College of Textiles to Demonstrate the ‘New World of Textiles’ at Annual Open House
High school students, parents, teachers and the general public are invited to learn more about the new world of textiles by attending North Carolina State University’s College of Textiles’ annual open house event on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The College of Textiles’ open house is free and open to the public, and no pre-registration is required. The event will be held in the College of Textiles building on NC State’s Centennial Campus.
Open house will showcase the latest technology in nonwovens, 3-D body scanning, digital printing, whole garment knitting, medical textiles, as well as traditional yarn spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing.
Exhibits and demonstrations on the world of polymer and color chemistry will spotlight the importance of science in textiles related to coloration, finishing and printing. Other demonstrations and exhibits will highlight nanotechnology, information systems, fabric comfort, thermal protection, textile engineering and forensics. Analysis of fibers and fiber degradation play an important role in the world of forensics.
Demonstrations of high-tech research mannequin “Pyroman” are also scheduled every 30 minutes. Pyroman endures searing heat and flames to test the latest in fire-protective apparel used by firefighters, armed services personnel and racecar drivers.
The new fashion and textile management degree will show potential students all the areas in the supply chain that need creative thinkers such as fashion development, product management, branding and merchandising.
Current students, faculty and staff will be available to answer questions about the college’s admissions process, the Centennial Scholarship program, financial aid, textile degree programs, career opportunities, the state of the textile industry, opportunities to study and intern abroad, other specialty areas, such as the Anni Albers Design program, and the medical textiles program.
“New World of Textiles” presentations by Dean Blanton Godfrey will be held in the college’s Convocation Center (Room 2309) at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. High school students who attend the “New World of Textiles” presentation will receive a free NC State T-shirt.
Attendees should make plans to spend at least two hours at open house to receive the full effect of the event. For more information and directions to the College of Textiles, visit the Web at www.tx.ncsu.edu/student_services/openhouse/ or call 919/515-3780.
