NC State Dean of College of Veterinary Medicine is President-elect of Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges
Dr. Warwick Arden, dean of NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named president-elect of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC).
The appointment is effective immediately for 2008-09. Arden will become president of the AAVMC during 2009-10.
The AAVMC coordinates the affairs of AVMA-accredited veterinary medical colleges in the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. There are more than 60 member institutions including selected departments of veterinary science, comparative medicine and veterinary medical education institutions.
“This is a challenging time for our colleges as veterinary medicine evolves to meet societal demands,” Arden says. “We must prepare outstanding graduates who not only care for companion animals, horses, and food animals, but who also protect our food supply, guard us from infectious diseases, ensure public health, serve as stewards of our precious wildlife and ecosystems, and expand the frontiers of comparative medicine with biomedical research from the cellular to the system level.”
Arden joined NC State as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. Prior to his appointment, Arden served as professor and head of the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Arden received his degree in veterinary science from the University of Sydney, Australia. He received his board certification in veterinary surgery from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1990.
