Pardue Named Faculty Athletics Representative

Dr. Sam Pardue has been appointed faculty athletics representative and chair of the Council on Athletics, effective July 1, 2009. Pardue will replace Dr. Donn Ward, who has announced his intention to retire Sept. 1.

Pardue is Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor and head of the Department of Poultry Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He joined NC State in 1989 as assistant professor and undergraduate teaching coordinator in poultry science.

“Donn Ward has served on the Council on Athletics for 14 years, including his time as the faculty representative and chair of the council,” Chancellor James Oblinger said. “We appreciate his service. He has provided good advice and counsel to the athletics department and the university. Sam Pardue has served on the council for almost a decade and will make a smooth transition to the position of chair and faculty representative.”

A native of Yadkin County, Pardue received his bachelor’s degree in poultry science in 1977 and a Ph.D. in physiology in 1983, both from NC State. Prior to returning to NC State as a faculty member, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and an assistant professor at Texas A&M University.

Pardue is a member of the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers and has also received the Purina Mills Award for Outstanding Teaching. He has served nine years on the Council on Athletics.

Ward, head of the Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, has served as faculty athletics representative for eight years.

The council assists the chancellor in the exercise of “institutional responsibility and control of intercollegiate athletics” as required by the university, the ACC and NCAA. The council also functions in advisory, compliance, liaison and representative capacities.
