Finding the Next Provost

The search for the university’s top academic officer has shifted into higher gear.

NC State’s next provost and executive vice chancellor may have circled the ad in the July 26 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education. Or, the successful candidate’s name could come from colleagues.

“We’re in the active recruiting stage, accepting nominations and direct applications from candidates,” said Margery Overton, chair of the faculty, who’s working with executive search firm Witt/Kieffer on the provost search. “Now is the time to make sure we get an applicant pool that’s as robust as possible.”

Overton, the search committee chair, encourages faculty and staff to weigh in on what they’re looking for in a provost—either via the online feedback form or in person during information sessions Aug. 18 and 26 from 1 to 2:45 p.m. in the Faculty Senate chambers at D.H. Hill Library.

“Some people are comfortable with written feedback, but we wanted to make sure to offer face time with the search committee so that faculty and staff can ask questions and share ideas directly,” she said.

The question she hears most frequently: Will we have an opportunity to meet the finalists?

The answer: “Yes.” Along with constituent meetings, the interview process will include some public forums. Although the format hasn’t been set, Overton said these sessions could feature seminar-style presentations.
