Math Makes a Difference
The American Mathematical Society (AMS) has named the NC State’s Department of Mathematics one of two winners of its 2011 “Mathematics Programs that Make a Difference” award. The award recognizes NC State’s “extraordinary record in serving students who have traditionally been underrepresented in mathematics, especially African Americans.”
Last year NC State won the society’s other departmental award, the AMS Award for an Exemplary Program or Achievement in a Mathematics Department. Nearly 1,400 mathematics departments are eligible for these two awards. NC State is the first ever to win them back to back.
