New, Returning Trustees Announced

Phil Freelon, of Durham, president of The Freelon Group; and Susan Ward, of Raleigh, a philanthropist and retired artist, have been appointed to NC State’s Board of Trustees. Barbara Mulkey and John Sall, both Cary residents, were reappointed to the 13-member board.

Freelon earned a Bachelor of Environmental Design degree from NC State in 1975. A current member of the UNC-TV Board and NC State Civil Engineering Advisory Board, he previously served on NC State’s Design Guild Board, Board of Visitors, College of Design Architecture Advisory Board, Design Foundation and Zia Lecture Committee. The Freelon Group, an architectural firm, is currently working on the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, to be located on the National Mall next to the Washington Monument.

Ward serves on a variety of boards and committees. She has contributed to and helped raise funds for NC State students, and created a significant number of scholarships across disciplines. She serves as president of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation. Ward’s artistic expertise includes stained glass design and production. As an artist-in-residence in her hometown, Kinston, N.C., she worked with physically and developmentally disabled students. Among her volunteer activities, Ward has served as an animal advocate for the Wake County SPCA and Newfoundland rescue efforts.

The board includes eight trustees elected by the UNC Board of Governors, four members appointed by the governor and the president of the student body.
