McKimmon Center Partially Open

The McKimmon Center has reopened following a small fire Tuesday morning, although some meeting rooms are unavailable because of smoke damage.

The McKimmon Café began serving customers again Wednesday. Meeting space and classrooms will reopen as cleaning and ceiling tile replacement is completed over next two weeks, said Jim Semple, director of insurance and risk management. The building didn’t sustain any structural damage, he said.

McKimmon staff are making arrangements to handle special events and training scheduled at the facility. For more information, contact Valerie Jones with the reservations and client relations office at 515-2277 or valerie_jones@ncsu.edu.

The Raleigh Fire Department responded to a fire alarm shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday and quickly extinguished flames in an exterior mechanical room, said Deputy Chief Jon Barnwell with campus police. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it appears to be accidental, Barnwell said.

Built in 1976 and expanded in 1983, the center encompasses almost 133,000 square feet. Each year, McKimmon is the site for 2,000 events involving some 200,000 visitors.
