Woodsons Announce Student Leadership Program

Chancellor and Mrs. Susan Woodson, in partnership with the Women’s Center, are proud to announce a leadership program for first year students.

The Chancellor’s First Year Student Leadership Program will:

• Identify and nurture a cohort of emerging leaders
• Improve participants’ self-efficacy, self-knowledge and leadership abilities through information sharing and relationship building
• Equip and maximize individual and group-based leadership competencies through service-learning opportunities on campus and in the Raleigh community

Nominations are open for 15 to 20 student participants who are committed to meeting two hours per week during the spring semester. As a new program, participants in the inaugural cohort will have opportunities to help shape the program, working with the steering committee.

Activities will include arranged dinners with the Woodsons at the chancellor’s residence. Here are some of the leadership topics the program will cover.

• Who Rules the World: An introduction to gender-based leadership theory
• History/Herstory: Historical perspectives and current laws that impact understanding of gender-based leadership
• The Hillary Clinton Effect: How female/male leaders are perceived and how you can harness the power of that perception
• Looking in the Mirror: What kind of Leader will YOU be? How we value where we are from and figure out where we are going
• R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Understanding motivation and leadership styles of others
• What in the World do you want ME to do about it? Our responsibilities in the world community

Student participants must be in their first year at NC State. Students from historically underrepresented groups, from rural areas and with a declared major in science, technology, engineering and mathematical fields are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications from all first year students will be considered.

To start the nomination process, faculty and staff should encourageinterested students to email Dr. Ashley Simons-Rudolph (apsimons@ncsu.edu), Women’s Center director, by Monday, Jan. 23. The email should include the student’s name, email address, telephone number (preferably mobile), declared major/minor and a one-page essay on why they are interested in a gender-based leadership opportunity.
