Back on Their Feet
A new clinical trial at NC State explores the promise of stem-cell therapy for treating paralyzed dogs.
Neurologist Dr. Natasha Olby with the College of Veterinary Medicine is working to restore some mobility to dogs like Tobi, a cocker spaniel who lost the use of his hind legs because of a herniated disc. Tobi, who relies on wheels to help him get around, has shown some improvement.

If the trial is successful, translating the treatment to humans is a natural next step.
For paralyzed people, even a small improvement in mobility—such as the ability to use a finger to tap a computer keyboard—could make a big difference in quality of life.
Watch video of Olby’s work and learn more about the potential of translational medicine.
