Brazel Receives Reznick Group Fellowship

Dr. Joe Brazel, associate professor of accounting, is the first recipient of the Reznick Group Faculty Research Fellowship. The fellowship is funded by a gift of $75,000 made to the Poole College of Management by Reznick Group’s Charlotte office to support research activities, including publications and attendance at forums and academic conferences. It is awarded for an initial three-year term to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellent research performance over the past five years.

“This kind of support is very important for the college, as support of research and the resulting development of thought leadership among our faculty helps to assure a quality curriculum and learning environment for our students,” said Dr. Frank Buckless, KPMG Professor and head of the accounting department.

Brazel’s research focuses on fraudulent financial reporting, fraud detection, judgment and decision-making, internal controls and other factors that are key to effective auditing practices. He is principal investigator for two research grants awarded by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. His research has been published in leading accounting journals and practitioner publications.

He teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, and risk and assurance, and developed a course in advanced auditing for students in the Jenkins Master of Accounting program.

Reznick Group has been a strong supporter of the college, as evidenced by the internship and employment opportunities it offers to graduates.
