Liu to Head Industrial and Graphic Design

An award-winning designer joins NC State in August as the new head of the Department of Industrial and Graphic Design. Tsai Lu Liu, associate professor of industrial design at Auburn University, will oversee the professional Bachelor of Graphic Design, Master of Graphic Design, Bachelor of Industrial Design and Master of Industrial Design programs in the College of Design.

Dean Marvin Malecha praised Liu’s background as both an academic and industry leader.

Tsai Lu Liu takes charge of the Department of Industrial and Graphic Design on Aug. 15.

“His familiarity with the sponsored studio will help to build the bridges between the academy and industry that are essential in a time of rapidly transforming expectations,” Malecha said.

Liu was recently named the acting associate dean for academic affairs and research in Auburn’s College of Architecture, Design and Construction. His professional career began at Design Principles, Inc. in Huntsville, Ala. He subsequently managed product design and marketing for companies in Taiwan. At Auburn, his studio clients included Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson.

Liu graduated with a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan and also holds an MBA from Georgia State University and a master’s degree of industrial design from Auburn. He has received several outstanding teaching awards.
