Ambassador to Speak on Big Issues

A distinguished international statesman turns an expert eye on two topics of interest to students of foreign policy next week. Don’t miss Jim McLay, New Zealand’s ambassador to the United Nations, at two events sponsored by the School of Public and International Affairs.

• Colloquium on the U.S. and the International Criminal Court – 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in Park Shops, Room 210.
• Small State – Big Issues:  New Zealand’s Role in International Affairs – 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, in Daniels Hall, Room 434.

Both events are free and open to the public.

McLay is the school’s first ambassador in residence. He had a long career in New Zealand politics, serving as a member of parliament, deputy prime minister, attorney general and minister of justice.

He was New Zealand’s commissioner on the International Whaling Commission and a member of the U.S. Humane Society’s International Council of Advisers. In 2003 he was made a Companion of the Order of New Zealand for service to conservation. The U.S. Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names and the New Zealand Geographic Board named an Antarctic glacier as “McLay Glacier” in recognition of his IWC work.
