Sawicki Receives NIH Grant
Greg Sawicki, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, has received a five-year, $750,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to compare different robotic ankle devices to assist people with stroke-related mobility impairments.
Sawicki received the funding for his project, “Novel platform for rapid exploration of robotic ankle exoskeleton control strategies to augment healthy or restore post-stroke locomotion.” He will collaborate with fellow principal investigator Steven Collins, a mechanical engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
The NIH grant comes to NC State through the National Robotics Initiative, which is charged with the development and use of robots that work beside, or cooperatively with, people.
Sawicki directs the Human Physiology of Wearable Robotics Lab in the joint NC State-UNC Department of Biomedical Engineering. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2007.
