Sustainability Efforts Lauded

NC State’s commitment to sustainability earned accolades on Earth Day with recognition of faculty, staff, students and programs that are helping improve the environment.

At both the City of Raleigh Environmental Awards and the State Energy Conference on April 22 the university community received several awards:

  • Award of Excellence from the Utility Savings Initiative of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, recognizing NC State’s progress and leadership in campus energy efficiency.
  • City of Raleigh Environmental Awareness Award honored NC State crop science professor Bob Patterson for leadership in teaching about the environment.
  • City of Raleigh Youth Award honored NC State student Caroline Hansley for environmental stewardship.
  • City of Raleigh Regional Award honored the Renewable Energy Technologies Diploma Series, which is coordinated by the NC Solar Center at NC State, for excellence in environmental stewardship in the region.

NC State has a strong showing at the 2014 City of Raleigh Environmental Awards.

These honors cap an award-winning month for NC State’s sustainability efforts. Earlier in April, NC State made the Princeton Review’s list of the nation’s most environmentally friendly universities. This is the third year NC State has been included in the Guide to 322 Green Colleges.

“These honors are great recognition for NC State and the many people on campus working to make the university leaner, smarter and stronger through sustainability,” said Tracy Dixon, director of the University Sustainability Office.

Also in April, University Dining was honored as the bronze recipient in the National Association of College and University Food Services’ Sustainability Awards, which recognize outstanding leadership in the promotion and implementation of environmental sustainability in campus dining operations.

“We are honored to receive this recognition.  Our University Dining team strives to foster lasting sustainability practices and to support the sustainability goals of our university,” said Keith Smith, director of residential dining.
