New N.C. Budget Boosts Salaries
The new state budget, signed by Gov. Pat McCrory last week, provides salary increases and bonus leave for state employees – including NC State faculty and staff. The amount and timing of salary increases will vary depending on several factors.
For example, full-time permanent SPA employees will receive a $1,000 base salary increase for the 2014-15 fiscal year. Part-time permanent SPA employees will receive a prorated increase based on the number of hours they work. For example, employees who work 80 percent of full time will receive $800.
Employees will first see the increase on their August paychecks, retroactive to July 1, when the fiscal year began.
Pool of Funds for EPA Raises
The state has provided a limited pool of funds to the university system for EPA salary increases. UNC General Administration has not allocated that pool to the campuses or provided guidelines for administering salary increases for EPA employees, says Barbara Carroll, associate vice chancellor for human resources at NC State.
“Based on what we’ve been told so far, EPA employees probably will not see any salary increases until October. Such adjustments typically are not made across the board,” Carroll says.
Bonus Leave Approved
Full-time permanent leave-earning employees, both SPA and EPA, will receive five days of bonus annual leave. Part-time permanent leave-earning employees will receive a prorated amount of leave.
The bonus leave will become available Sept. 1 and is “available until used,” according to the budget legislation; in other words, the leave does not expire at the end of the fiscal year.
