Top Award for Veterinary Pharmacist
NC State veterinary pharmacist Gigi Davidson has received the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention’s highest honor, the Beal Award for Distinguished Volunteer Service. The award includes $10,000, which Davidson donated to the pharmacy residency program in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Davidson, director of clinical pharmacy services, served as chair of the USP’s Compounding Expert Committee. Under her leadership, the committee developed a guidebook with compounding standards for use by practitioners and regulatory authorities.
“We deeply appreciate not only Gigi’s unique expertise in compounding pharmacy, but her skill as an arbiter of challenging issues, her ability to balance the pragmatic needs of compounding practitioners while helping to ensure patient safety and her talent for working collaboratively across a wide variety of interest groups,” said Shawn Becker, senior director of Healthcare Quality Standards.
Since 1820, the USP has relied on volunteer experts to develop programs and standards to ensure the quality of medicines and foods.
Recently, Davidson was appointed to represent USP on the FDA Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee. In addition to her work at the national level, she is frequently called upon by state boards of pharmacies to explain complex compounding issues related to specific laws and legislation.
Davidson sits on numerous professional boards and committees, including the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists and the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board Standards Committee. She previously served on the FDA’s Task Force on Compounding in Veterinary Medicine as well as the FDA/AVMA Ad Hoc Committee on Veterinary Compounding.
