Energy-Saving Tips for Winter Break

Give the gift of savings—energy savings—this holiday season.

The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling has many suggestions for measures staff and faculty can take to save energy while the university is close for the winter break, including lowering temperatures in many university building from Dec. 24 through Jan. 3.

A campus-wide savings initiative coordinated by NC State’s Energy Management office, the Winter Holiday Energy Saving Initiative has avoided more than $2.76 million in energy costs since the program’s launch in 2004.

Additionally, members of the campus community can generate energy savings through these actions:

  • Hit the switch on overhead and task lighting before leaving your office, residence hall or lab.
  • Pull the plug on nonessential electronics, including coffee makers, toasters, radios, fans and other small appliances. If breakroom refrigerators are cleaned and defrosted, the appliance can be unplugged and the door left open.
  • Power down computers and non-essential scanners, printers and other office equipment.
  • Close exterior windows and doors for added security and energy efficiency.
  • Close laboratory fume hood sashes and power down nonessential lab equipment.

Research labs, occupied support spaces, animal facilities and designated facilities that are critical to the university’s mission are excluded from this program.

NC State Transportation will do its part by closing most parking decks and dimming the lights on several surface parking lots from Dec. 23-Jan. 4.

The first two levels of the Centennial Biomedical Deck at the College of Veterinary Medicine, the first two levels of the West Deck and the Centennial Campus Poulton Deck will remain open while the rest of campus is shut down.

Decks will close at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23, and will reopen early on Monday, Jan. 4.

Lighting at some surface parking lots will also be turned off to reduce power usage. Affected lots include Oval Drive Storage lots, the Main Campus Drive Storage lots, the Varsity lot and Centennial Biomedical Campus North lot
