Wolfpack Community Invited to Gather for Vigil

A planned campus vigil in response to recent acts of violence across the country and globe took on new meaning this week after Tuesday’s shooting at UNC Charlotte. Faculty, staff and students are invited to reflect and respond to the impacts of these tragedies at the “Pause with the Pack” community vigil Thursday, May 2, at the Talley Student Union.

Chancellor Randy Woodson will lead a moment of silence and share brief remarks in the Talley lobby at 4 p.m. The Student Involvement Suite (Talley 4210) will be open until 6 p.m. for students, faculty and staff to “listen and engage both pain and hope, share refreshments and participate in artistic and restorative response,” said Sheri Schwab, interim vice provost for institutional equity and diversity.

The NC State Counseling Center will have representatives available throughout the vigil for individuals seeking additional support. Faculty and staff seeking support have resources available through the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. 

“It’s heartbreaking to reach out to you twice this week about instances of violence,” Woodson said in his letter to the campus community after the UNC Charlotte shooting.

“Each of these tragedies deeply affect members of our community, leaving many hurting, frustrated, angry and scared,” he said in his response to recent violence against religious communities. “These hateful and senseless acts can leave us all feeling somewhat powerless to help.

“But we must not become complacent. As individuals and a university community, we can make a difference on our campus, in North Carolina, and I believe in our world.”
