Adverse Weather Information and Resources
Good morning,
As we enter National Preparedness Month, it is important to review how adverse weather could affect NC State’s operating status. Changes to the university’s operating status are made in accordance with our adverse weather policy and based on the latest information, including National Weather Service forecasts, guidance from the UNC System Office and directives from local and state emergency management.
The university also takes into consideration many campus-specific factors, such as clear and safe access to roadways and university grounds. Weather forecasts might not always be accurate, but the university must weigh the likelihood of an adverse weather event against the timeliness of a campuswide notification.
Please review our three operating conditions to better understand how changes to campus operations due to adverse weather could affect you.
Condition 1 (reduced operations): The weather might not pose severe safety risks or logistical challenges, but there is significant potential for it to negatively affect campus services, buildings and grounds, or people commuting locally. Classes are generally in session and the university is open, but some operations may be reduced. Nonmandatory employees may be advised to stay home or to work remotely with supervisor approval; mandatory personnel should report to their workplaces.
Condition 2 (suspended operations): There are likely more severe safety risks or logistical challenges that require the university to limit the number of individuals traveling to campus and remaining there. Classes are canceled — regardless of the format — and the university is open on a very limited basis, with only mandatory operations functioning. Only mandatory/critical employees should report to campus. If mandatory employees have questions about whether or not to report, they should communicate in advance with their supervisor. Nonmandatory employees who are unable to work remotely are required to submit leave to cover their absence.
Condition 3 (closure): There are significant risks to health and safety, or there are logistical challenges that will severely impede university operations. The university is closed; classes are canceled, regardless of the format. Mandatory employees should consult with their supervisor before reporting to campus, and nonmandatory employees should not report to work and are not required to submit leave to cover their absence.
Reminders
Staff, faculty and students should always communicate with their supervisor or instructor and consider their own personal circumstances and safety when determining how to report during adverse weather. If an employee is unsure whether they are considered mandatory or nonmandatory, please check with University Human Resources. Students who need emergency housing, food or other items can connect with the available university resources. The Office of Student Life and Advocacy is available to help with absence verification requests.
NC State communicates operating status changes via WolfAlerts, the university homepage and social media channels. To learn more about the university’s adverse weather procedures, visit our adverse weather website.
Thank you.
