Registration Opens for NC State’s Encore Fall Courses, Trips
North Carolina State University’s Encore Center for Lifelong Enrichment, which offers a variety of non-credit programs for adults aged 50 and older, has begun registration for its fall 2009 courses, trips and events, which run from Sept. 9 to Dec. 11.
Thirty-seven short courses and five lectures covering a range of subjects in the liberal arts and sciences will be offered. Participants can learn about such diverse topics as U.S. immigration history and trends, old B-Western movies, organic farming, Mennonites, digital photography, new science discoveries, and why some Muslim women choose to wear a veil. Study trips include a four-day trip to Washington, D.C., that will focus on “new Washington” such as the Newseum, the new Capitol Visitor Center and the National Air and Space Museum annex. Encore’s fall open house on Sept. 9 will feature NC State Professor Emerita Lucinda MacKethan, who will speak about race and gender in Southern literature.
Encore’s membership fee is $50 and runs from Sept. 2009 through Aug. 2010. Membership includes NC State benefits such as library privileges and discounts on campus cultural events. Most short courses are $45 each and trip and event prices vary. Call 919/515-5782 for a free catalog or visit Encore on the Web at www.ncsu.edu/encore.
