Jones Honored for Graduate Teaching

Sam Jones, professor of equine medicine, has received the NC State Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Professorship for outstanding graduate level teaching. The honor includes an award of $4,000.

“The selection committee was unanimous in its praise of the exceptional record of graduate student training shown by Dr. Jones,” said Rebeca Rufty, acting dean of the Graduate School and a member of the committee. “Particularly impressive were the letters from the students themselves, which attest to the extraordinary quality of the mentoring that Dr. Jones provides students both during and after their graduate programs at NC State.”

Jones, who joined the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998, is assistant head of equine programs, director of the Comparative Biomedical Sciences Program and the Combined DVM/Ph.D. Program, and co-director of the Veterinary Scholars Program. He is a past recipient of the Herbert Benjamin Distinguished Professorship.

With a research focus on gastrointestinal, infectious and inflammatory diseases in horses, Jones is the principal investigator in the Leukocyte Biology Lab.
