Veterinary Service for Exotic Pets Opens at NC State

Soon Fido and Fluffy won’t be the only beneficiaries of top-notch veterinary care from North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. On Aug. 20, NC State’s Exotic Animal Medicine Service (EAMS) will open to provide care for our fine feathery, finned or scaly friends.

EAMS will see both primary care and referral cases, providing routine and specialized medical and surgical care for:

• a variety of caged birds as well as raptors, pigeons and backyard poultry
• small mammals like gerbils, ferrets, hedgehogs, rabbits and sugar gliders
• nonvenomous reptiles and amphibians such as toads, turtles, snakes and lizards
• fishes
• invertebrates ranging from coral to tarantulas

The service will not see wildlife, venomous reptiles, nonhuman primates, or large carnivores.

Available services include anesthesiology, behavior modification, dentistry, cardiology, critical care, dermatology, emergency medicine, nutrition, ophthalmology, neurology, oncology, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, radiology/imaging and internal medicine.

After-hours emergency services are available for all veterinary hospital clients. Weekday emergencies will be accommodated for existing clients and efforts will be made to accommodate new clients whenever possible.
