Carb-Loaded Champs
A cold February rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 7,500 participants in this year’s Krispy Kreme Challenge, who helped raise more than $100,000 for the N.C. Childrens Hospital during the annual four-mile, doughnut-fueled dash to downtown and back.
The Krispy Kreme Challenge started in December 2004 as a dare between a few NC State undergraduate students. Sophomore Ben Gaddy took home bragging rights that afternoon, running the race in 34 minutes and 27 seconds. After receiving positive coverage from the campus newspaper and being placed as #85 on the”102 More Things You Gotta Do Before You Graduate” by Sports Illustrated, organizers decided to publicize the Krispy Kreme Challenge and turn it into something that would not only be an event to bring together people from all over the country, but also to benefit an important cause along the way.
Jeffrey Glick (Ft. Bragg, NC) finished first overall with a time of 29:31, while Raleigh’s Trisha Moore (36:30) finished first in the women’s division. (Photos by Becky Kirkland/University Communications)
