Narayan Wins Materials Science Award

Dr. Jagdish “Jay” Narayan received a 2011 Lee Hsun Lecture Award for contributions to materials science and technology.

Narayan is among 10 honorees to receive the honor from the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenyang National Lab for Materials Science. The award is a component of the Lee Hsun Lecture Series, established in 2001 to strengthen cooperation in materials science research and academic exchange.

A faculty member at NC State since 1983, Narayan holds more than 35 patents. His research has enhanced the understanding of basic phenomena in metals, ceramics and electronic materials and processing. The John C.C. Fan Family Distinguished Professor in Materials Science and Engineering has made seminal contributions in laser processing and semiconductor alloys.

Narayan received an Acta Materialia Gold Medal and Prize as well as a Gold Medal from ASM International, the world’s largest materials science and engineering society. He was inducted with the Materials Research Society’s 34 inaugural fellows and made a life member and fellow of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, an honor limited to 100 living members.

Narayan earned a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, all in materials science and engineering.
