Books of Summer

After the end-of-semester rush, the books in the summer reading stack beckon.

Ready to discover a new author? Looking for fresh ideas? NCSU Libraries asked 20 colleagues which books are piled next to the comfy chairs on the screened-in porch.

Some selections, like Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, NC State’s common reading selection, are bound to stimulate ideas for classroom discussion. Others, like Dr. Seuss’ Ten Apples Up on Top, are perfect for sharing with a child.

Chemistry professor Jeremy Feducia’s summer reading list ranges from Catalytic Asymmetric Synthesis to The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes. Craig Brookins, associate professor of psychology and Africana studies, plans to sample Beer is Proof That God Loves You, along with digging into scholarly tomes as he researches his next book.

The featured books include mysteries,  science fiction and biographies of Malcolm X and Marie and Pierre Curie. Other titles could help you gain inner peace through meditation, understand your dog’s behavior or improve your negotiation skills.
