Mitchell’s Retirement Reception Aug. 31
A retirement reception for Dr. Tony L. Mitchell, assistant dean for engineering student services, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Room 3002 of Engineering Building II. To join the celebration, RSVP to April Jackson, ajackson@ncsu.edu, by Wednesday, Aug. 24.
Mitchell first arrived on campus in 1982 as a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering. He studied on a U.S. Air Force fellowship while on active duty as a major.
Mitchell completed his dissertation in 1987 while serving as an instructor at the U.S. Air Force Academy. In 1990, he retired as a lieutenant colonel and joined the NC State faculty as an associate professor.
Mitchell was named head of North Carolina A&T State University’s electrical engineering department in 1992, a position he held until 1994, when he became a faculty rotator at the National Science Foundation. He remained an NC State faculty member during this time.
He returned to campus in 1995 with additional duties directing minority engineering programs. In that role, he instituted a summer transition program to help students acclimate to course work in math and chemistry, the university computing system and college life. He was promoted to assistant dean for engineering student services in 1997, adding responsibilities for scholarship programs in the College of Engineering.
