Graduate Students Honor Schulman

NC State’s Sociology Graduate Student Association honored Dr. Michael Schulman with its Lifetime Mentorship Award for 30 years of work with graduate students in sociology and anthropology.

Schulman, William Neal Reynolds professor and alumni distinguished graduate professor, accepted the award March 1.

An NC State faculty member since 1977, Schulman directed graduate programs in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology from 1992-97 and 2005-06. Since 1998, he has served as adjunct professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Schulman’s research focuses on occupational health and injury among young workers, the public health impacts of farm vehicle accidents on public roads and the interrelationships between labor market restructuring and changes in community quality of life, including occupational injury.

From 1999 through 2006, Schulman was a member of the Board of Collaborators of the North Carolina Institute for Health and Safety in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. He has also served as a senior research fellow with the university’s Research and Professional Ethics Program He edited the journal Rural Sociology from 2008 to 2011. In 2011, he was elected president of the Rural Sociological Society for 2012-13.

While Schulman spent the vast majority of his NC State career in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, in 2011 he moved to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Department of 4-H Youth Development and Family and Consumer Sciences as part of departmental reorganization.
