Four Appointees Named to NC State Board of Trustees

North Carolina State University’s Board of Trustees added two new members and had two members reappointed to four-year terms. All four were elected by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

New Appointments

Thomas “Tom” Edward Cabaniss of Richmond, Va., earned his Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering from NC State and earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia. Cabaniss has previously served on the NC State University Foundation Board of Directors and as president of the Alumni Association. He is a founding member of the State Club Board of Directors, vice president of the Wolfpack Club and an honorary lifetime member of the Alumni Association.

Dr. Ronald “Ron” W. Prestage of Camden, S.C., earned his Bachelor of Science degree in animal science from NC State. He graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University and completed an equine surgery internship at the University of California-Davis. Prestage has served as chair of the S.C. Poultry Federation Board of Directors, the National Turkey Federation and the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association, and serves on the board of directors of the National Pork Producers Council, the S.C. Chamber of Commerce and the Black River Electric Cooperative.

Reappointments

Benjamin “Ben” P. Jenkins of Charlotte earned his Bachelor of Science degree in textile chemistry from NC State and received his MBA from the University of Alabama. Jenkins has chaired the board’s University Advancement Committee since 2011. He has previously chaired the Audit, Finance and Planning Committee, and has served on the Academic Affairs and Personnel Committee, the University Affairs Committee and the Buildings and Property Committee.

James “Jim” W. Owens of Peoria, Ill., and Southern Shores, N.C., earned his Bachelor of Science degree in textile technology, Master of Science degree in textile technology and Ph.D in economics from NC State. Owens has chaired the board’s Audit, Finance and Planning Committee since 2011. He has previously served on that committee, as well as the Buildings and Property Committee and the University Affairs Committee.

NC State’s Board of Trustees is composed of 13 members: eight are elected by the UNC Board of Governors, four are appointed by the governor, and the remaining member is the president of the student body.
